SculptureNarrative “The penance of Arjuna”
The narratrives in Eastern Java art usually depict human sculpture similar to Java shadow play. The sculpture only shows on side of the face and never face the audience directly. It wears local crown which is different from that in India. The space is filled with flower and cloud patterns. The building itself is of the local style. All of these localities show unique characteristics of “Eastern Java art”.
SculptureWall Carvings: Mahabharata - Bhishma death scene.
The western side of the lower gallery of Angkow Wat depicts the story from Mahabharata. The style of Angkor Wat art can be studied from the drapery of the figure in the narrative. The pointed crown with the diadem, the necklace with the row of pointed tassels, the short Sompot with the triangular piece of drapery at the side are the characters of Angkor Wat dressing.

These temples closely resemble to those in South Indian art. The plan of the temple is characterized by the sanctum attached by the short porch. The body is divided by four pilasters into three parts, i.e. the central and the side projections. The superstructure comprises the superimposing miniature tiers (Tala) and the corner miniature temple (Hara). The step-like contour of the superstructure is similar to those in South Indian art.
