History of productionBorobudur is the loftiest Mahayanist Stupa in Indonesia. Constructed under the patronage of Mahayanist Shailendra dynasty. The Stupa was conceived in accordance with Mahayanist concept of Mandala or the microcosm. Every level represents the Bhumi or the spiritual level in Mahayana Buddhism. The lowest level represents Kamabhumi (the realm of desire) occupied by the story from Karmavibhanga or the story of desire-indulged people. The upper level is occupied by the narratives from Lalitavistara and Jatakas, the story of Shakyamuni as the representation of the transitional real between Kamabhumi and Rupabhumi. The top terrace is occupied by the narrative from Gandhavyuha, depicting the story of Sudhana who searched for the emancipation.
ArtThe style of the narrative at Bodobudur closely resembles to that in Indian art, considering from the style of ornaments, the style of utensils, the volume of the figures as well as the arrangement of space.
