Religion and belief

There are eight great Mahayana Bodhisattvas in the sculpture. The eight Bodhisattvas were standing around the Buddha who is located in the Chandi.

The eight Bodhisattvas appeared before in Ellora caves of Indian arts during the beginning period of Chalukya dynasty in 12th century BE. Later it appeared again in Indian art in Pala dynasty in 14th-18th centuries BE. Hence, arts in central Java should be influenced by one of the Indians.

In fact, the eight Bodhisattvas exhibit the qualities of the Buddha in various aspects.
