Key academic information

An example of a replicated Phra Bang in the northeastern region

Notice

1. The decoration of belt might have been an influence from the ornamented Buddha image in Rattanakosin art because such a decoration had never appeared in Phra Bang Buddha images before.

2. This Buddha image is different from other replicated Phra Bang in that it is of a human-like size, but other replicas were often small.

3. In other documents, it is often indicated that it was built in 1465, but from the art characteristics, it is more likely to coincide with the new interpretation that it was built in 1765.

Legend

According to a legend, this Buddha image was produced in Laos together with a Buddha image of meditation attitude, which is now located at Ban Don Ting, Hin Boon City, Laos. During wartime, Phra bang was hidden in Hin Herb cave, Ban Nakok, Kham Kerd. Later, teacher Ta Pongsri and his followers visited Hin Boon city for a rain retreat. They had heard about the beauty of this Buddha, so they moved the image from the cave and enshrined it at Wat Phra Dhat Utain and later at Wat Tribhumi. It is believed that when there is drought, people can bring Pha Bang out for a parade and the rain will come.
