History of production

The construction history remains unclear. However, the art characteristics suggest that it might have been created in Dvaravati period. They were contained in a clayed containers buried under the building called “Umyaku” Kantaravichai, Kantaravichai District, Mahasarakham.

There are 66 silver plates embossed in different pictures including Buddha image, stupa and the wheel of law, each with distinctive pictures.

Key academic information

This is an example of ancient objects in Buddhism that were created from embossed silver plates. It was the largest discovery of this kind. It was found by archaeologists from Fine Arts Department. These plates of several ancient objects in Buddhism were found in clayed contaners buried under a building. This might be an act of making merit for people at the time.

They were found in 1972 when Fine Arts Department excavated the archaeological site called “Umyaku” Kantaravichai, Kantaravichai District, Mahasarakham.
