Art

The containers of Benjarong are in different style: the bowl in lotus pedal style, bowl and jar with lid, plate with a foot. All styles usually have the bases to support. It is popular to draw Thep Phranom pattern, Himmapan animal pattern and other animals with different colors on a red background in a lotus-bud top a frame. The rest of the area draws flora patterns and the background color is contrast with the colors of the patterns.

Key academic information

Benjarong or Kreuang tuay haa see has been very famous from late Ayutthaya until eary Rattanakosin. They are indifferent shapes such as Bowl with lid, bowl, plate with a foot. The word Benjarong comes from the colors of the pattern on the container; five main colors: red, black, white, green and yellow. The most common patterns are Thep Phranom Lotus-bud, Norasing, and Himmapan animals supported by flora design. The containers ususally have bases. If there are lids, the lids are usually in different layers and there is one that called Fa Yod Prik. Since it was very famous to use Benjarong in the royal place, the patterns of Benjarong were written and sent to China, the important place to make porcelain. The patterns on the Benjarong can clearly shows the relationsip between China and Siam from Ayutthaya to Rattanakosin periods.
