Key academic information | Phra Kot Thong Yai is used to contain the body of the deceased kings, queens, or royal family members. There are three Phra Kot Thong Yais in Rattanakosin period: Phra Kot Thong Yai built in the reign of King Rama I, Phra Kot Thong Yai built in the reign of King Rama V, and Phra Kot Thong Yai built in the reign of King Rama IX. For Phra Kot Thong Yai in the reign of King Rama I, the king, Phra Phutthayotfa Chulalok requested to remove the gold plated from Kot Kudan and use the gold to build Phra Kot Thong Yai for his own body. But within that same year, Chao Fa Jam, the king’s daughter passed away first. The king then allowed Phra Kot Thong Yai to be used for the first time with the funeral of Chao Fa Jam. From that incident on, Phra Kot Thong Yai can be used not only for the kings but also for other royal family members. However, the decoration of the Phra Kot Thong Yai is different depending on the rank and the status of a person. Phra Kot Thong Yai for the king will be enshrined and decorated with lotus-bud top flowers, paper flowers with quivering stems, a bunch of hanging flowers, silver laces, and ornamental flowers (Dok Mai Aw) decorated around the waist of the urn. |
