History of production

Created on the desire of King Rama V by Alfonso Tornarelli, the Italian artist. It is molded from Khantharrath Buddha image form in India in 1910.

Art

Imitated Khantharrath art Buddha image, standing in Rainfull gestures, look up, the right hand is in the signal for the rain gestures, left hand placed on the leg to receive rain. The face has a Greek-Roman gods style. Tie hair, no halo. The body shows human muscles. Wear the oblique thick streaks robe. Stand on the lotus above the top of staircase of BokKoranee Pool. There is a railing nearby decorate with Goddess of Land squeeze the hair and Naga man which means water and abundance.

Khantharrath Buddha image means Rainfull Buddha image named after the city of Khantharrath in India, it is said that the King of that land built this Buddha image for pray for rainfall Followed by events in the Buddha's biography.

In the Rattanakosin period, the Buddha image was use for various rituals for the abundance of the country, and to brought rain to the season include the ceremonial rain (Pirunsartra) and the Royal Ploughing Ceremony. Originally, Khantharrath Buddha image was a sitting Buddha image. The right hand is in the signal for the rain gestures. Left hand placed on the leg to receive rain. That is call Rainfull gestures.

Later in the reign of King Rama V, he ordered to created Khantharrath Buddha image by imitating the art of Khantharrath of India and expresses the concept of Western realism. There is a railing nearby because in the Sutantapitaka(one of the Tipitaka) said about this event that Lord Buddha was standing on the stairs of the BokKoranee Pool.
