History of production

The date of creation was uncertain. However, scholars can speculate its dating in the 9th to 11th century AD from the style which resembles the Dvaravati architecture and stucco decoration, for instance, Wat Klong Suwan Kiri.

Conservation

Khao Klang Nai was listed and declared an ancient monument in the Government Gazette, no. 52 section 75 on 8 March 1932.

Before the 3rd Regional Office of Fine Arts Sukhothai began an excavation and conservation on this ancient monument in 1978, its appearance was a large rectangular mound like a pyramid and had been covered by soil mixed with laterites and bricks, weeds and large-size plants. However, because of its massive scale, the first excavation on the northern and the eastern parts was inefficient.

The second excavation in 1988 covered 850 square metre on the former work, including some parts of the top. A continue working in the latter year specified on the northern and the eastern parts, where lots of artifacts were found.

SizeApproximately 28 metre in width, 44 metre in length and 12 metre in height.
Art

Khao Klang Nai is a laterite stupa in an incease-corner rectangular plan and has an eastern staircase leading to upstairs veranda. The present condition of Khao Klang Nai is relatively dilapidated. Only large base with some shouldering-dwarf-shaped and floral-shaped stucco, especially on the southern part, can be seen, while other compounds and the top are nowhere to be found.

Key academic information

Khao Klang Nai is situated at the centre of Sri Thep, which later passed the conception of city-centre stupa to Sukhothai and Ayudhya periods.

As a huge city-centre sacred monument, Khao Klang Nai showed that Sri Thep once had the deep-rooted Buddhism. Moreover, its finest shouldering-dwarf-shaped stucco is still found nowadays at the platform.
Notice

Khao Klang Nai was not the original name of this ancient monument. It was called by the locals from its appearance as a large mound (Khao), which was believed that the treasure was embedded in the soil (Klang), and its location was in Sri Thep (Nai).
