History of productionPo Nagar is the temple for enshrining the goddess of South Champa Kingdom, Bhagavatī, a form of Umā. The history of the temple can be traced back to the8th-9th centuries, during which the statue of Bhagavatī had already enshrined. However the temple was destroyed once by the Khmer army in the 9th-10th century and the temple as well as the new statue was erected again in the early Binh Dinh period. This temple and statue still survive nowadays.
ArtPo Nagar tower is assigned to the transition period between the periods of My son A1 and Binh Dinh. Whereas the five-set fluted pilaster is the characteristic of My Son A1 period, the spear-liked pointed arch Is of the later Binh Dinh style.

Religion and beliefThe power of Hindu god is ls called as Śakti. This is personified as the goddess. In Hinduism, that is why the goddess is always worshipped by the side of the gods. In Champa, both Śiva and Umā were equally worshipped. Differently, whereas Śiva, associated with mountain, was worshipped at My Son in North Champa, the goddess, associated with the ocean, was worshipped at Po Nagar in South Champa.
Related artworkThe tympanum depicting Mahiṣāsūramradinī and the statue of Bhagavatī are contemporaneous to the temple. These attest that the temple was dedicated to the Devī.
