History of productionSuryavarman I ordered to construct the royal palace in the north direction from the original city of Angkor. At the center of his poyal palace there locates Prasat Pimeanakas which was the temple for enshrining the royal Śivalinga in accordance with Devarāka cult.
ArtPrasat Pimeanakas is the stepped pyramidal temple with 3 high platforms. However, the gallery is located on the top of the uppermost platform. This indicates the architectural evolution of Khmer architecture.

Religion and beliefSeveral centuries after the reign of King Suryavarman I, Chiw Ta Kuan, a Chinese ambassador who travelled to Angkor, mentions in his record that this temple is believed to be the abode of the kingdom’s spirit in the form of the serpent. It was, as her records, mandatory for the king to be at the temple every night.
