History of production | Talunmin, a king of Ava in Nyaungyan Dynasty, had the stupa Kuangmu Daw constructed for enshrining the tooth relic taken from Mahazedi in Hamsavati. The relic was taken to Ava during the previous reign, King Anaukpetlun. The stupa was influenced by the Mahāthūpa in Sri Lanka. |

Art | The most important element is the colossal hemispheric Aṇḍa, inspired from the same element of Ruvanveliseya at Anuradhpura. The triple base is very low comparing to the height of the whole stupa, incluenced from Sri Lankan styled stupa. The spire, including the square Harmikā and the rings of Chatravali, are surprisingly omitted from this stupa. |

Religion and belief | The tooth relic of the Buddha is believed by the Burmese to be the original one. It has been taken to Burma during the reign of King Bayinnaung. During that time, Sri Lanka was threatened by the Portuguese and the King of Sri Lanka was not able to take care of the relic. The relic therefore was taken over to the Burmese. The enshrinement of the tooth relic also attests the ambition of Bayinnaung who tried to promote himself as the emperor of the universe and tried to exalt Burma as the centre of the cosmos. |
