History of production

According to the temple history, it was built before 633 by the wealthy Inta family, father of Queen Chamadevi which is located on an island in the middle of a swamp, therefore called Wat Ko Klang. But from the art form, it can be aged in the 19th Buddhist Century.

Art

This chedi is a five-pointed top castle shaped chedi. The bottom base supports the ruenthat, which is a chaturamuk chamber with arches protruding on all four sides. Each arch has decorative stucco designs. Above the ruenthat is a bell shape chedi with spire but already broken.

Key academic information

It is the early period castle-shaped chedi in Lanna art that has been restored in the latter period.

Notice

1. Although the form of this chedi is connected with Bagan art and it is dated in the 19th Buddhist Century, but from the stucco pattern on the arch frame and the decorative pattern on the top - bottom which is the Lanna vine pattern which is the pattern in Lanna art during the 21st Buddhist Century onwards, indicating that this pagoda was later restored.

2. The area above the four corners of the ruenthat have enough space to place a modeled chedi but now they are no longer appears. Assuming that originally they should have but already broken.

3. This chedi appeared influenced by Bagan art, may be related to the evidence that Phraya Mangrai march an army to Bagan in 1290 and brought the art form back to Lanna.

1. The Chiang Yan Chedi of Wat Phra That Hariphunchai, Lamphun province is an example of the first period castle shape chedi in Lanna art that is contemporary with the chedi of Wat Ko Klang and has stucco motifs in the same period.

2. The chedi in the field out side Wat Ko Klang, Lamphun province is a castle shape chedi that uses the same axial support system in Bagan art, but has an age after the chedi at Wat Ko Klang.
