Bronze

Art

This Buddha image is in seating posture and a subduing Mara attitude. It has small hair buds, flame-like halo, round face, sharp shin, clear hair lines, big eyes, very large nose, smiling mouth of Lanchang style. The monastic cloth splits and extends to the abdomen. The fingers are large and of the same length. It is seated on a lotus base with Singha and inscription at the octagonal base underneath.

Key academic information

An example of a Lanchang Buddha image that has a clear name and year of construction indicated in an inscription.

Notice

The use of lotus base perforated with Singha is influenced by Singha base from Ayutthaya, which previously appeared in Lanchang art in the reign of King Chetthathiraj. The examples include the base of a Buddha image at Wat Thamsuwankhuha. Although the inscription mentions that it was built in the year 1662, this perforating technique was of Lanchang artisan.
