History of production

The construction history remains unclear. However, the art characteristics suggest that it might have been built in Dvaravati period.

molded on clay and then heated.

Art

This is an oval votive tablet. There is a Buddha image with dropping legs in the middle. The hands are depicted in the attitude of giving the first sermon. The Buddha image is in a building of Sikara surrounded by small stupas. There are lotuses supporting his feet on both sides. There are patterns, which can be a crouching deer.

Key academic information

This votive tablet reflects the relationship between Pala art of India and Pukam art of Mynmar. The depiction of Buddha image with a dropping legs, the attitude of giving the first sermon and sitting in a Sikara may be a replication of Buddha image and architecture of Saranat, the place where the Lord Buddha performed the first sermon.
