History of production

The construction history remains unclear. However, the art characteristics suggest that it might have been built in Dvaravati period.

Art

This reclining Buddha was constructed by piling large sandstones and craving them into a Buddha image. It is in reclining on the right (so called Sri Saiyas). The right arm is laid on the ground to support the head. The left arm is place on the body. Both feet are placed evenly.

The face is made of craving of several sandstones and has several conventional Dvaravati characteristics including square face, prominent and connected eyebrows, low-looking and prominent eyes, large nose, big mount.
Key academic information

This is the largest reclining Buddha in Dvaravati art. It reflects the close relationship between Dvaravati art in the central and Dvaravati art in the northeast, especially Meung Sema.
