History of production

When Somdet Chao Phraya Borom Maha Pichaiyat (That Bunnag) or Somdet Chao Phraya Ong Noi took a position of Praya Si Pipat Ratana Kosa Dhibodi, the chamberlain of Warehouse Deparment, he established Wat Phitchayayat and proposed it as a royal temple in King Rama III period.

Art

It is the stone sculpture in rectangular frame portraying parts of the story of the Romance of Three Kingdoms. The engraving shows the pictures of people wearing Chinese clothes. The scenery consists of trees, sky, vehicles, and animals which all these are the Chinese carving style.

Key academic information

The varanda around Phra Ubosot of Wat Phitchaya Yatikaram is decorated with small rounded poles and the base of the poles are adorned by low relief stone sculptures of the story of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms which were ordered or bought from China. Each part perfectly fits the space between the varanda posts; it shows that the sculptures were meticulously selected to decorate around Ubosot. This is the only place in Bangkok with the story of the Romance of the three kingdom stone sculpture decoration. Each displayed story is the important part that is well-known in broad such as Zhuge liang playging guqin to fool Sima Yi and Lu Bu stopping the army. However, the story is not in order acoordingly to the story of the Romance of the Three Kingdom.
