History of production | When Somdet Chao Phraya Borom Maha Pichaiyat (That Bunnag) or Somdet Chao Phraya Ong Noi took a position of Praya Si Pipat Ratana Kosa Dhibodi, the chamberlain of Warehouse Deparment, he established Wat Wat Phitchayayat and proposed it as a royal temple in King Rama III period. |

Art | It is the Buddha image in royal attire. The robe is worn across the shoulder. The image is seated with the Siddhasana legs crossed which the right foot is placed above the left foot in the attitude of mediation. The face is quite round. The eyebrows are arched. The area between the eyelids line and the eyebrows is the sheets of eyelids. The eyes are quite small glancing low and not widely opened. The lips are small and also the hair coils. The body is slim. These are the Buddha image features in King Rama III period which could be compared to the Buddha image in royal attire during the same period of time in Wat Nang Nong. |
Key academic information | Phra Si Ariya Mettrai is placed in Prang on the eastern wing of the pricipal Prang of Wat Phitchaya Yatikaram. It is the seated Buddha image in royal attire performing the attitude of meditation facing towards the four Buddhas inside Phra Puttha Prang which is the principal Prang of the temple. This corresponds to the beliefs that the Buddha is waiting in Tusita heaven to become enlightened to be the next Buddha in Bhadrakalpa, therefore deity attires are adorned over the robe worn across the shoulder. The Buddha image also wears a pointed crown with traditional ear accessories, arm cuffs, bracelets, ankle bracelets and crossing breast chains at the front and back. Other Buddha features are similar to the four Buddhas inside Phra Phuttha Prang which is situated in the front of Phra Si Ariya Mettrai, therefore they are believed to be built by the same group of artisans. |
