Art

Phra Ubosot Wat Phra Sri Rattanasatsadaram is a traditional Thai brick-and-stucco architecture in rectangular plan with boundary and faces the east.

The three-tiered wooden roof is decorated by blue roof tiles, with orange and yellow roof tiles at the edge line. The cornice is decorated with Chorfah, Bairaka, Naksadung and Hanghong. The floral-carved-wooden pediment is coated with gold lacquer and glass, whose centre displays Vishnu riding Garuda.

The exterior wall is decorated with gold-lacquer-and-glass Phoom Khao Bindh pattern, while there are Garuda holding Naga sculptures around the pedestal.

Three doorways can be found both in the front and the back, with three pairs of bronze lion figures at the front staircase.

There are pillars in dodecagonal plan surrounding the ubosot in the veranda area. Its echinus is a lotus shape and brackets are supporting the eaves.
Key academic information

1. Wat Phra Sri Rattanasatsadaram lies in the Northeast of the Grand Palace. As it was built by the order of King Rama I to be the temple within the precinct of the palace, in the same way as Wat Phra Sri Sanphet was built within the precinct of the palace in Ayudhya. Therefore, the temple has a section containing only chapel and none monks’ livning quarters

2. Not only Phra Phuttha Maha Mani Rattanapatimakorn or the Emerald Buddha, the sacred buddha image which is considered as the palladium of the kingdom, is housed in the Ubosot, but other important buddha images, for example, Phra Phuttha Yodfahchulalok, Phra Phuttha Loetlahnaphalai and Phra Samphutthaphannih, are also housed here.

3. Both royal rites and other royal ceremonies, such as The Royal Seasonal Cloak Changing and The Royal Ploughing Ceremony, are observed in the Ubosot Wat Phra Sri Rattanasatsadaram
