History of production

King Rama IV ordered to build Ho Shastrakhom on the exact spot where the former throne hall that paired with Dusidabhirom Throne Hall was. The former throne hall was built in the reign of King Rama I, which was used for teaching monks in the reign of King Rama III.

Art

Ho Shastrakhom is a traditional Thai brick-and-stucco architecture with wooden roof frame and two-tiered roof that is decorated by green and orange roof tiles. The cornice is decorated with Chorfah, Bairaka, Naksadung and Hanghong. The floral-carved-wooden pediment is coated with gold lacquer and glass, whose the centre stands a deva holding a sword in his left hand and a trident in his right hand. The columns with echinus in circular plan are suppoting the eaves. The veranda is decorated with green porcelain tiles. There are windows and doorways except the eastern side. Above those windows and doorways are paintings of the royal insignia and weapons.

Key academic information

Ho Shastrakhom is the place where Mon monks chant Sattaparitr Gatha for uttering incantations upon water that will be washed by the King and sprinkled on the palace. This ritual have been performed since the reign of King Rama IV.

Inside Ho Shastrakhom, the Maravijaya-seated Phra Phuttha Parite is installed. This buddha image was made in the reign of King Rama IV by weaving the bamboo, plastering and painting.
