ArchitectureSan Augustin Church
The architectural element of San Augustine’s façade is of classic style, including the triangular pediment supported by the Corinthian columns in the upper register and by the Ionic columns in the lower register. The rose window at the pediment is however reminiscent of the Gothic style. The belfry, originally there were two, is now only one survived following the earthquake in the 19th century.

In San Augustin Church, there are tunnel vault and Trompe l’oeil which was painted on the celing by a couple of Italian painters in 1875. At the end of this church, there is also a statue of Saint James, the Saint of Spain, with a sward in his hand.

The painting on the ceiling of San Augustine Church at Manila was painted by two Italian painters in 1875. It produces the illumination of the architecture on the ceiling which is called as Trompe l’ oeil which was the popular technique during Renaissance and Baroque period. In European art, the technique of Trompe l’Oeil can be either the illumination of the architecture or that of the sky.

Our Lady of Fatima is situated on a vehicle. It is believed that this statue is carried in a procession along the street during important Christian festivals.

In her life, Mary had suffered seven sorrows which were like a sword stuck in her heart. One of her seven sorrows was the taking down of the Body of Jesus from the Cross. In terms of iconology, this event is called “pieta” which means “pity” since Maria was crying during the taking down of the Body of Jesus.

Since the Philippines was once colonized by Spain and Saint James was one of Jesus’ apostles and was the Saint of Spain, the image of Saint James is then used to decorate the gate of Sandiago’s fortress.
