History of productionMasjid Abdul Gaffoor is located in a merchant village of Indian-muslim. Originally, it was made of wood and tiles. Later, in 1797, Abdul Gaffoor, the caretaker, renovated the area around the Masjid by building a lot of row houses, which generated a lot of money for the construction of a new masjid. In 1817, a new Masjid was built under the supervision of Abdul Gaffoor. However, in 1829, when he died, the construction had not been finished and was later finsihed when his son took over the project.
ArtThis masjid is highly influenced by the western culture in terms of the Roman arch of Loggia system, the patterns and the dome. The dome follows the classical western art having an arch to support the dome in the pendentive system. On top of this, there is a crossbeam supporting the core of the dome, which has windows and Ionic columืs. The top part is the dome with continuous rib from the columns to the top. All of these are the characteristics of the classical dome, which is very different from an Islamic dome.
