History of production | Mayamayatmuni was the most important Buddha image of Rakhine Kingdom. The image was located at Dhanyavati, the ancient capital of the kingdom. After the collapse of Rakhun e Kingdom, King Bodawpaya ordered to move this image to his capital Amarapura. During the process of moving through the mountain ranges, the image must be dismembered and damaged. The beautify the image, gold leafs and the regalia have been added to the image. |

Art | Buddha image in Rakhine Art is characterized by the absent of the robe of the upper body. The image sits in Virasana posture in south Indian fashion but gestures Maravijaya which differently affiliates to North Indian art. King Bodawpaya and later kings presented him some regalia and he image became the bejewelled Buddha. The regalia style, such as the pointed crown and the breast chain in X-shape is of Ayutthayan fashion as it is noted that several Ayutthayans settled down at Sagaing after the collapse of Ayutthya in the 18th century A.D. |

Religion and belief | According to the mythology, Buddha himself came to Rakhine and blessed the image with his own inhale and exhale. The Buddha image, therefore, has been considered to be the living Master and the image must be taken care as if this is the real body of the Master, including the waking up in the morning, the face washing and the presentation of the provisions. These ceremonies continue even nowadays. |
