History of production

King Chansittha ordered the construction of this chedi. The legend had it that monks from India told him the story about Nunthamul cave in Kunthamat mountain. He then ordered the construction of this chedi to be the same as the cave. Buddha images in the chedi may be built at the same time with the chedi.

Religion and belief

Scripture both in Theravada and Mahayana coincide that a Bhothisavara cut his hair to get ordained. This symbolises that he has left the secular world. Some scripture also mentions that he throws his hair into the sky to cast lots, too.

This sculpture is the Bhothisavara using his right hand to cut his hair and his left hand to hold it. He wears a costume of a regular person having a sliding robe. Later, he starts wearing monastic robe.
