History of production | Fort Santiago is located north of Intramuros. Formerly, it was a fort of sultan Sulaiman. In 1571, Intramuros was established by Spain as a new capital of the Philippines and Fort Santiago was constructed with wooden wall. In the 18th century, the gate was built to devote to Saint James, the patron of Spain. This gate was later destroyed during World War II and then it was rebuilt in the late 20th Century. |

Religion and belief | Saint James is one of the first apostles of Jesus. He is also the patron of Spain. Since the Philippines was colonized by Spain, the gate of Fort Santiago was decorated with a carved wooden relief of Saint James. However, Spain was once largely under Muslim or the Moors who were defeated by Christian. For this reason, Saint James is usually illustrated as a saint on horseback overcoming the Moors. |
