History of productionCentral Laos was the area being under the influence of Dvaravati culture from Northeast Thailand. Lots of Buddha images and Sima boundary stones have been discovered, One of the Buddha image of this period is the colossal Buddha images at Tham Chang (literally Elephant Cave), locating in the north outside the city of Viang Chan.
ArtThe characteristics of Buddha images in Dvaravati art of Central Laos, similar to those in Northeast Thailand, are the indigenous facial expression, the small hairy curls suggesting Khmer influence. Vitarka gesture is very popular during this period, as so the loose cross-legged sitting with one sole shown.
