History of production

There is no evidence related to its origin. However, Prei Khmeng and Kampong Preach style associated with Khmer Arts before Mueang Phra Nakhon suggest that it was casted around the 13th century B.E.

Art

The Maitreya Bodhisattva’s head is a convex sculpture located on a cave wall but it was secretly extracted. The face of the sculpture is long with arched eyebrows. The eyes are look downward. The nose and the mouth are well balanced. The long hair is put up in a bun above the head in a large cylinder shape. The layers of hair form an image of a stupa in the middle of the bun.

Key academic information

Maitreya Bodhisattva’s head from Tamor ratr, Si Thep district, Phetchabun province reflects the widespread of Mahayana Buddhism in the area of Mueang Sri Thep and Tamor ratr cave. In addition, its style also reflects the connection of the Mahayana Buddhist community in the lower Isan region, in Nakhon Ratchasima and Buri Ram provinces because it also shares the art style of Lopburi or Khmer in Thailand before Mueang Phranakhon.

Notice
