The Subduing Mara Buddha Image

No creating history was found, but from the art form, the age can be determined to belong to the 20th Buddhist century.

This Buddha image sits in a full-lotus seat on a supine lotus with a pollen pattern base in a Subduing Mara posture. It has a round face, big knotted hair, look-down eyes, slightly open mouth, knotted jaw, ushnisha with lotus shape on top, fat body and short split ends sanghati above the chest.

The examples of Lanna art Buddha images during the 20th century.

1. The edge of a piece of fabric characteristics in Pala art, Bagan art and Hariphunchai art in the fan shape. But in the Lanna art during the 20th Buddhist century , the edge is split into two.

2. From the 20th Buddhist century until the end of the kingdom era, the Lanna art’s Buddha images in the form of a Singh Neung were continuously developed in parallel with the Singh Song. Therefore, the original theory that the Singh Neung type Buddha image is older than the Singh Song type is incorrect.

1. The Subduing Mara Buddha Image of Chiang Mai National Museum is another Lanna art Singh Neung type Buddha image during the 20th Buddhist century that has the same characteristics.

2. The Subduing Mara Buddha image of the Wat Phrachao Mangrai, Chiang Mai province is an important example of a Singh Neung type Buddha image which has an inscription stating that it was made in the 21st Buddhist century and has the traits that it was developed from Buddha images in previous centuries.
