History of production

No creating history was found, but from the patterns, it can be assumed that it was made in the middle of the 21st Buddhist century during the Rattanakosin period. Somdet Phra Bawornrajchao Maha Sura Singhanat brought the Buddha Image from Chiang Mai in 1795 and housed at the Bhutthaisawan Throne Hall.

This Buddha image sits in a half-lotus seat on a lotus base displaying the meditating gesture. It has an oval face, small knot hairs, high ushnisha, high flame halo, look down eyes, slightly open mouth, knot jaw, symmetrical body, oblique robe and large split ends centipede fang shaped sanghati.

Key academic information

The important Lanna art Buddha image that was once believed to be Sukhothai art.

Notice

a large sanghati is a common feature of Buddha images that was made during the reign of Phra Muang Kaew and commonly found in Ayutthaya art. It shows the influence of Ayutthaya art in Lanna art.

2. The Subduing Mara Buddha Image of the Bhutthaisawan Throne Hall, Bangkok is an example of a Buddha image with the similar Buddhist art traits as Phra Chao Kao Tue. An inscription at the base read the year of making, 1497, indicating that it was also built during the reign of Phra Mueang Kaew.
