History of production

There is an inscription of Wat Phra That Lampang Luang inscribed in the ancient Lanna language that can be transcribed into the information that Phra Chao Lantong was cast in 1503.

This Buddha image is seated in the full-lotus seat on a supine lotus base with large petals and lotus stamens. It displays the Subduing Mara posture. It has a small oval face, small knotted hairs, flaming halo, narrow forehead, little mouth and the groove on the sides with a delicate body and large split ends centipede fang shaped sangha. It was enshrined within Ku Prasart.

Although this Buddha image’s overall appearance is similar to the Lanna art Buddha image, which was influenced by Sukhothai Art, it has a very folk character, such as a narrow forehead and smallmouth with a groove on the side.

1. Phra Chao Kao Tue of Wat Suan Dok, Chiang Mai province is an example of a Buddha image created in the reign of Phra Muang Kaew as well as Phra Chao Lantong which reflected similar Buddhist art. However, Phra Chao Lan Thong evidently contained more local traits.

2. The Subduing Mara Buddha image of Wat Muen Kad, Lampang province, is an example of the Singh Song Buddha image style of Lanna Art, which is found in Lampang province. It has similar characteristics to Sukhothai art and is different from Phra Chao Lan Thong, which looked more local.
