Art | The Lord Buddha stands on a lotus on a vehicle. The Lord Buddha is surrounded by two people, one on each side. Both hands depict the giving sermon attitude and there is a hole on the leg. The vehicle is a mixed animal. It has wings, a beak, horns. Such animal is commonly called Vanaspati. One person on the sides holds a whip and the other holds an umbrella. It is therefore assumed that these people are Indra and Brahman. |
Key academic information | There has not been a clear interpretation of the Buddha Image on Vanaspati, but scholars are in agreement that it is a unique characteristic of Davravati art and culture. This also reflects that there was a new interpretation of Buddhism at the time and a change in the religious artwork to fit with the local belief of Buddhism. |
Notice | Discovered at Nakhon Pathom It is believed that the hole on the leg is there to hold the Buddha image with other things. Some scholars believed that it was used to hold the image with the Wheel of the Law and there is a hole above its core. |
