History of production | Built in the reign of King Rama II. Originally built in the Suan Kwaa park in the Grand Palace. Later, His Majesty King Rama III order to move to built at Wat Bovornniwet Vihara temple in 1851 to be the residence of the Prince Mongkut when he was ordained. |

Art | Phra Panya is a Western-style building that blends with Chinese. It is a masonry building with rectangular layout, 3 floors, each floor has cornice molding around to distinguish each floor. The roof is cover with tile and the gable decorated with Chinese-style tiles, they are western leaf and flower shaped. Central gable decorate with crown. The two sides flanked by a five layer tiered which is the symbolic of Prince Mongkut. Exterior walls are not decorated with patterns. Doors and windows are squares. |
Key academic information | Phra Panya is a palace that King Rama III give to Prince Mongkut to be a place when he was ordained and came to occupy Wat Bowonniwet Vihara temple. The building is a western building with cornice molding around to distinguish each floor which is a unique feature found in the building of the early Ratanakosin period. At the same time, it also incorporates a Chinese-style roof and gable, adorned with glazed tiles but not decor a “Kreuang Lam-yong”.(Thai traditonal roof decoration) There are strict rules since the Prince Mongkut was occupy the temple to prohibit women to get inside Phra Panya. Phra Panya was the royal residence of the Prince Mongkut until he leave the Buddhist monkhood and ascended the throne to be come King Rama IV and remains the residence of the monarch and the prince who is ordained and stay at Wat Bovornniwet Vihara temple such as King Rama VI, King Rama VII, King Rama IX, Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn(King Rama X) |
